Colorectal cancer can sometimes develop quietly, especially in its early stages. That is one reason changes in your digestion, bowel habits, or general health should not simply be ignored.
But there is an important point to remember: having one of these symptoms does not mean you have colon cancer. Many of the same symptoms can be caused by hemorrhoids, infections, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, certain medications, or other conditions.
Still, persistent or unexplained changes deserve medical attention.
1. A Persistent Change in Your Bowel Habits
One of the most important warning signs is a new and persistent change in the way you normally have bowel movements.
This can include:
- Constipation that doesn’t go away
- Frequent diarrhea
- Alternating constipation and diarrhea
- Stools becoming noticeably narrower
- A change in how often you need to use the bathroom
A temporary change is usually not a reason to panic. But if a new bowel pattern continues or keeps returning, it’s worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
2. Blood in Your Stool
Seeing blood in or on your stool is another symptom that shouldn’t automatically be dismissed.
