Have you ever coughed, sneezed, or cleared your throat and noticed a tiny white or yellowish lump come out of your mouth? If it had an unusually strong, unpleasant smell, chances are you experienced something known as a tonsil stone.

Although they can be alarming, tonsil stones are surprisingly common and are usually harmless. However, they are one of the most overlooked causes of persistent bad breath.

Understanding what they are, why they form, and how to prevent them can help you improve both your oral health and your confidence.

What Are Tonsil Stones?

Tonsil stones, also called tonsilloliths, are small hardened deposits that develop inside tiny pockets (called crypts) in the tonsils.

They form when materials become trapped inside these crevices, including:

  • Food particles
  • Dead skin cells
  • Mucus
  • Saliva
  • Bacteria

Over time, these materials harden and form small white, yellow, or cream-colored stones.

Why Do Tonsil Stones Smell So Bad?

The unpleasant odor comes from bacteria.

Certain bacteria naturally live inside the mouth and throat. When trapped debris remains inside the tonsils, these bacteria break down the material and produce sulfur compounds—the same substances responsible for the smell of rotten eggs.

This is why tonsil stones often have an extremely strong odor, even when they are very small.

Common Symptoms of Tonsil Stones

Some people never realize they have tonsil stones until one comes loose.

Others may experience:

  • Persistent bad breath
  • White or yellow spots on the tonsils
  • Feeling that something is stuck in the throat
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Mild sore throat
  • Ear discomfort
  • Bad taste in the mouth
  • Frequent throat clearing

Larger stones may become more noticeable and uncomfortable.
