The pancreas is a vital organ located behind the stomach in the upper abdomen. Although it is relatively small, it plays a crucial role in your health by producing digestive enzymes that help break down food and hormones like insulin that regulate blood sugar.
Pancreatic cancer develops when abnormal cells in the pancreas begin to grow uncontrollably. Unfortunately, it is one of the most difficult cancers to detect early because symptoms are often subtle or absent until the disease has progressed.

1. Yellowing of the Skin or Eyes (Jaundice)
One of the earliest and most recognizable signs of pancreatic cancer is jaundice.
It occurs when a tumor blocks the bile duct, causing bilirubin to build up in the body.
Symptoms may include:
- Yellow skin
- Yellowing of the whites of the eyes
- Dark urine
- Pale or clay-colored stools
- Itchy skin
Jaundice should always be assessed promptly by a doctor.
2. Persistent Upper Abdominal Pain
Pain caused by pancreatic cancer often begins in the upper abdomen and may spread to the middle or lower back.
