What Do Circular Red Patches on the Skin Mean?
Finding a round, red patch on your skin can be surprising and sometimes concerning. While many skin rashes are harmless and temporary, circular lesions may have several different causes ranging from fungal infections to chronic inflammatory skin conditions.

1. Ringworm (Tinea Corporis)
One of the most common causes of circular red patches on the skin is ringworm, medically known as tinea corporis.
Despite its name, ringworm is not caused by a worm. It is a fungal infection affecting the outer layer of the skin.

- Circular or ring-shaped rash
- Raised, red border
- Clearer center
- Itching
- Dry or flaky skin
- Gradual enlargement of the rash
Ringworm is contagious and can spread through direct contact with infected people, animals, contaminated towels, clothing, gym equipment, or other shared personal items.
2. Nummular Eczema
Another possible cause is nummular eczema, also called discoid eczema.
Unlike fungal infections, eczema is not contagious.
