Step 1: Remove Surface Dust
Before washing:
- Remove pillowcases.
- Remove protective covers.
- Shake pillows outdoors.
- Vacuum both sides using an upholstery attachment if possible.
This removes loose dust before washing.
Step 2: Eliminate Odors Naturally
If pillows smell musty, sprinkle baking soda over both sides.
Allow it to sit for approximately 30–60 minutes.
Baking soda naturally absorbs moisture and odors without damaging fabrics.
Vacuum away the remaining powder before washing.
Step 3: Wash Two Pillows Together
Always wash two pillows simultaneously whenever possible.
This balances the washing machine drum and allows for a more even spin cycle.
Select:
- Gentle cycle
- Warm water
- Mild detergent
Avoid excessive detergent because pillows retain soap easily.
Too much detergent leaves residue that can make pillows stiff.
Step 4: Add White Vinegar
Instead of traditional fabric softener, add about half a cup of distilled white vinegar during the rinse cycle.
Benefits include:
- Neutralizes odors
- Softens fabric naturally
- Helps dissolve detergent residue
- Brightens white fabric
The vinegar smell disappears completely after drying.
