I adopted the girl everyone blamed

I froze.

Standing on my porch, soaked by the rain, was a woman I hadn’t seen in ten years.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

“Emily…?”

She nodded slowly, tears streaming down her face.

“I’m sorry, Dad.”

My knees buckled beneath me. I collapsed onto the floor as years of grief, anger, and unanswered questions crashed over me all at once.

Nora stepped beside her.

“I’ve wanted to tell you the truth for so long,” she whispered. “But I was terrified.”

Emily reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a faded silver bracelet—the one I had given her on her tenth birthday. There was no doubt. It was really her.

“But… how?” I managed to ask.

Emily looked down before speaking.

“That night, we weren’t alone in the woods. A man stopped us. He knew my name. He told Nora to run… and if she ever told anyone what happened, he’d make sure neither of us would ever see you again.”

Nora broke into tears.

“I wasn’t protecting myself,” she cried. “I was protecting Emily. Every single day, I carried the guilt of letting everyone believe I was responsible.”

For ten years, she had lived with whispers, accusations, and hatred—without ever defending herself.

Emily continued.

“He kept moving me from place to place. I tried to escape more than once, but I was always caught. Last month, I finally got away. It took weeks to find Nora… and she begged me to come home.”

I pulled both girls into my arms, unable to stop crying.

For the first time in a decade, my family was together again.

But the nightmare wasn’t over.

Emily looked toward the window, her face suddenly filled with fear.

“He knows where I am now,” she whispered.

I frowned.

“Who?”

She slowly raised her trembling hand and pointed to an old family photograph hanging on the wall.

“The man who took me… wasn’t a stranger.”

“He was someone you trusted.”

The room fell silent.

Then there was a loud knock at the front door.

Three slow knocks.

The exact same way Emily had described hearing them the night she disappeared.

I looked through the window…

…and my blood ran cold.
