I Found a Strange Spiked Object Under My Son’s Bed During a Power Outage—Then I Realized What It Actually Was
When the lights suddenly went out during a late-night power outage, I grabbed a flashlight and began checking every room in the house. While looking under my son’s bed to make sure everything was safe, the beam caught something unusual—a small, dark object covered in sharp-looking spikes.
At first glance, it looked alarming. My mind immediately jumped to the worst possibilities. Was it some kind of dangerous insect? A strange seed? Or even something hazardous that had somehow ended up in the house?
Curious but cautious, I picked it up with a pair of gloves and examined it more closely. To my surprise, it wasn’t alive at all. After comparing it with photos online, I discovered it was simply a sweetgum seed pod, often nicknamed a “gumball.” These spiky seed balls fall from sweetgum trees and are commonly tracked indoors on shoes, pets, or blown in through open doors and windows.
Although they look intimidating, sweetgum seed pods are generally harmless. They’re a natural part of the tree’s life cycle and contain seeds that are released as the pod dries. Many people mistake them for dangerous objects because of their unusual appearance and sharp spikes.
If you find one in your home, there’s usually no cause for concern. Simply dispose of it or keep it as an interesting natural curiosity. However, because the spikes can be sharp, it’s best to keep them away from young children and pets who might accidentally step on them or try to put them in their mouths.
Sometimes the strangest discoveries have the simplest explanations. What first appeared to be something mysterious and frightening turned out to be nothing more than a seed pod from a common tree—a reminder that appearances can often be deceiving.
