Six weeks later, Emmy invited the entire family over for a lavish dinner. She couldn’t stop talking about how her “generosity” had made our wedding possible. Every time someone complimented the ceremony, she would smile proudly and remind them that she had paid for a large part of it.
I simply smiled and let her enjoy the attention.
What she didn’t know was that I had been waiting for this exact moment.
After dessert, she proudly brought out the family photo albums, eager to show everyone pictures from the wedding. She placed the newest album in the center of the table and announced, “Let’s relive the happiest day of the year.”
Everyone gathered around.
As she flipped through the pages, there were beautiful photos of the ceremony, our first dance, and the guests enjoying themselves. Then she reached the page where the cake-cutting ceremony should have been.
Instead of a romantic photo of Mark and me cutting the cake together, there was a full-page picture of Emmy standing alone with the knife, smiling proudly as she cut the cake herself while everyone else looked shocked.
Under the photo, I had added a simple caption:
“The woman who believed paying for the wedding made her the bride.”
The room fell completely silent.
Emmy’s smile disappeared instantly.
