Recently, one social media creator reignited that discussion after responding to critics who argued that larger passengers should pay more for airline seats. Her comments quickly spread across social media, generating thousands of reactions and highlighting the ongoing debate over body size, accessibility, and airline policies.
A Viral Debate
Jaelynn Chaney, a plus-size travel influencer from Washington state, frequently shares content about travel accessibility and body inclusivity. She has previously advocated for airlines to provide additional seating accommodations for passengers whose bodies do not comfortably fit within standard economy seats.
After posting videos discussing her experiences while flying, Chaney received numerous comments suggesting she should either lose weight, purchase first-class tickets, or pay extra if she requires more space.
Rather than ignoring the criticism, she addressed it directly in a series of TikTok videos that quickly gained widespread attention.
“I’m Not Luggage”
One of the comparisons that drew the strongest response involved people arguing that airlines already charge passengers for overweight luggage, so larger passengers should also pay additional fees.
Chaney rejected that comparison, saying it was both hurtful and dehumanizing.
According to her, comparing a person’s body to baggage reduces individuals to objects rather than recognizing them as paying customers who deserve respectful treatment.
She argued that charging someone based solely on body size would unfairly single out one group of passengers.
