What Does Modern Research Say?
Scientific interest in soursop has grown over the past several decades because its leaves contain numerous plant compounds, including:
- Flavonoids
- Polyphenols
- Alkaloids
- Essential oils
- Annonaceous acetogenins
Laboratory studies have shown that some of these compounds possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Cancer Research
Perhaps the most widely shared claim is that soursop leaf tea “kills cancer cells.”
Here’s what the evidence actually shows:
Researchers have found that certain compounds extracted from soursop leaves can affect some cancer cells in laboratory experiments and animal studies.
However:
- Laboratory studies are not the same as human studies.
- The doses used in research are often much higher than those found in tea.
- There are no large clinical trials proving that soursop leaf tea treats or cures cancer in humans.
For this reason, major medical organizations do not recommend soursop as a cancer treatment or substitute for standard medical care.
Blood Sugar and Diabetes
Some early animal studies suggest that compounds in soursop may influence blood sugar regulation.
However, research in humans remains extremely limited.
Anyone with diabetes should never replace prescribed medication with herbal remedies unless advised by their healthcare provider.
