These Breast Changes Should Never Be Ignored

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women, but an important fact is often overlooked: breast cancer does not always cause noticeable symptoms in its early stages.

That is why knowing what is normal for your breasts—and paying attention to new or unusual changes—can be so important.

A change doesn’t automatically mean cancer. Breasts naturally change with age, hormones, pregnancy, menstruation, and other benign conditions. But when something is new, persistent, or clearly different from your usual appearance, it deserves attention.

1. A New Lump or Thickened Area

A new lump in the breast or underarm is one of the changes people are often advised to have checked.

Many breast lumps are not cancerous. Cysts, fibroadenomas, and other benign conditions can also cause lumps.

Still, you shouldn’t try to determine the cause by touch alone. A healthcare professional can decide whether imaging or other testing is appropriate.

2. A Change in Breast Size or Shape

If one breast suddenly becomes noticeably different in size or shape, don’t simply assume it is a normal variation.

Changes can occur for harmless reasons, but a new and persistent difference should be evaluated.

3. Skin Changes on the Breast
