can create compounds known as heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Laboratory studies suggest these chemicals can damage DNA, which is one reason experts recommend avoiding heavily charred meat.

Should You Stop Eating Meat?

Not at all.

Most nutrition experts agree that moderation is the key.

Instead of eliminating meat completely, consider:

  • Eating processed meats only occasionally.
  • Choosing lean, fresh cuts more often.
  • Replacing some meat meals with fish.
  • Including beans, lentils, tofu, and other plant proteins.
  • Avoiding burnt or heavily charred meat.
  • Adding plenty of vegetables to every meal.

Small dietary changes maintained over many years can have a meaningful impact on overall health.
