1. Thick White, Cottage Cheese-Like Discharge
Possible Cause: Yeast Infection
One of the most common vaginal infections is a yeast infection (candidiasis).
Typical symptoms include:
- Thick white discharge resembling cottage cheese
- Intense itching
- Redness
- Swelling
- Burning sensation
Usually there is little or no odor.
Common Risk Factors
- Antibiotic use
- Pregnancy
- Diabetes
- High estrogen levels
- Weakened immune system
- Tight, non-breathable clothing

2. Thin Gray or White Discharge With a Fishy Odor
Possible Cause: Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
Bacterial vaginosis occurs when the normal balance of vaginal bacteria changes.
Symptoms may include:
- Thin gray or white discharge
- Strong fishy smell
- Odor that becomes more noticeable after sex
- Mild irritation
Unlike yeast infections, itching is often minimal.
Treatment usually involves prescription antibiotics.
3. Yellow or Green Discharge
Yellow discharge isn’t always abnormal.
A pale yellow color without odor or irritation may simply reflect diet, vitamins, or normal oxidation.
