Have you ever noticed a small white spot or line on one of your fingernails and wondered what it means?
Because our nails can sometimes reflect changes happening in the body, it’s easy to assume that any unusual mark must be a sign of a nutritional deficiency or another health problem.
The good news is that most small white spots or lines on the nails are harmless.
They are often caused by minor trauma to the nail—sometimes from something so small that you don’t even remember it happening.
What Are These White Marks Called?
White spots or patches on the nails are commonly referred to as leukonychia.
They can appear as tiny dots, short lines, or larger white areas within the nail.
Despite the common belief that white spots automatically mean a calcium deficiency, that is not usually the case. Minor injury to the part of the nail that produces the nail plate is one of the most common explanations for isolated white marks.
A Small Injury Can Leave a Lasting Mark
You don’t necessarily have to slam your finger in a door to damage a nail.
Something as ordinary as:
- A manicure
- Aggressive filing
- Picking or pushing the cuticles
- Bumping your finger
- Repeated pressure on the nail
- Certain everyday work or household activities
can sometimes cause temporary changes.
The interesting part is that you may not notice the mark immediately.
The injury can occur near the base of the nail, where new nail cells are produced. Weeks later, as the nail grows outward, the white area becomes visible.
That’s why you might suddenly notice a white line and have absolutely no idea what caused it.
