Vitamin D is well known for helping the body:
- Build and maintain strong bones
- Absorb calcium
- Support muscle function
- Help regulate the immune system
Many people obtain vitamin D through sunlight, certain foods, and dietary supplements.
What the Study Found
Researchers followed thousands of older adults over approximately four years as part of a large clinical trial.
Participants who took a daily vitamin D supplement showed less shortening of their telomeres compared with those who received a placebo.
Telomeres are protective caps located at the ends of chromosomes. Each time cells divide, telomeres naturally become shorter. Scientists consider telomere length one of several markers associated with biological aging.
The researchers concluded that vitamin D supplementation appeared to slow this telomere shortening during the study period.
What Are Telomeres?
Think of telomeres as the plastic tips found on the ends of shoelaces.
Just as those plastic tips prevent shoelaces from fraying, telomeres help protect chromosomes from damage.
As people age:
- Telomeres gradually become shorter.
- Extremely short telomeres are associated with cellular aging.
- They have been linked to a higher risk of certain age-related diseases.
However, telomere length is only one indicator of aging and does not tell the whole story.
