Garlic and Honey at Night: What This Simple Combination Can—and Cannot—Do

A spoonful of honey mixed with garlic has become a popular nighttime health ritual online. Some viral posts claim that this combination can dramatically improve circulation, reduce inflammation, or even make an older person’s blood vessels function like those of someone decades younger.

The reality is more modest—but still interesting.

Garlic and honey can both be part of a healthy diet, and garlic in particular has been studied for its potential effects on cardiovascular health. However, there is no good evidence that eating garlic and honey at night can dramatically “activate” circulation or reverse age-related changes in the blood vessels.

What matters most is the overall pattern of your diet, physical activity, sleep, blood pressure, cholesterol, and other cardiovascular risk factors.

Why Garlic Gets So Much Attention

Garlic contains sulfur-containing compounds that become more active when the cloves are chopped or crushed. One of the best-known compounds is allicin, which is produced when garlic’s cells are damaged.

Researchers have investigated garlic for possible cardiovascular effects, including modest effects on blood pressure and cholesterol in some circumstances. However, the evidence is mixed, and garlic should not be considered a substitute for prescribed treatment.

Adding fresh garlic to meals can nevertheless be a flavorful way to increase the variety of plant foods in your diet.

What About Honey?

Honey contains naturally occurring sugars as well as small amounts of antioxidant compounds.

It can be used as a sweetener, but it is still a source of added sugar. Eating large amounts of honey does not provide a special cardiovascular benefit, and people who need to control their blood sugar should take its carbohydrate content into account.

A small amount can make garlic easier to eat, but more honey does not mean more health benefits.
